What ever happened to truth in advertising?

In today’s marketplace, some of the offers you hear, see and/or read about seem too good to be true….and you know what, they are!!  It bothers me that certain nationally known companies have come up with stealthy ways to lure you to buy from them.  If floor covering isn’t something you buy every day, it becomes dramatically more important that you know what you are buying when you hear some of the unbelievable offers that are out there.

Back in my early years of advertising, when you stated that something was 25% off, you had to be able to show proof that you actually sold the same item for 25% more to other customers.  Today there are national ads on television showing floor covering on sale for 60% off.  60% off of what?  Do you really believe the company advertising this amazing offer actually sold the same flooring for 60% more to somebody?  It is an offer that sounds to good to be true.  And if you believe that then you need to look at the land I have for sale in Florida!

Another seemingly amazing offer is the ‘whole house carpet installation’ for just $139.00 being offered by the big box stores. Let me shed some light on this… on average, professional installation costs of a typical houseful of carpet should be just under $1000.00.   So how can the box stores do the installation for almost $850 less?  The simple and factual explanation is that you are paying nearly three times what you should be paying for the pad that has to be sold with your carpet order.  That makes up the labor price difference pretty fast!!  Don’t believe me?  Tell the salesperson at the box store that you already have  padding….you’ll be told that whether you need the pad or not, it is part of the package and you have to pay for it even if you don’t need it.  Some deal huh?   And it doesn’t stop there.  If you have additional labor services beyond the typical installation, like removal of old carpet, furniture moving, stair installation etc., you will pay 30% to 50% more for these services.  It’s true because we did the shopping ourselves!

At Crest Wholesale Carpet & Flooring, we only sell floor covering one way…the honest way. I learned a long time ago that that is the only way to run a business.  A little short cut here, a little misleading statement there will add up to running a business where you have to constantly be looking over your shoulder.  We run a straightforward business and have done so since 1952.  We don’t ever want to fool our customers with gimmicks or hidden costs.  We will never tell you that something is on sale for 60% off unless it really is 60% off the price we sold it for originally. (Who makes that kind of mark up anyway?) Do a little investigation because the sale that seems too good to be true…always is!!
